The 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, brought us announcements for the latest iterations of both the Playstation and Microsoft gaming consoles. No matter if you’ve got the PS5 or Xbox Series X on your list, you may be wondering “do I need a static IP address for better gaming?”
We’ve got answers. But first, some definitions:
Static vs. Dynamic IP Address
A static InternetA global wide area network (WAN), also described as a networ... Protocol (IP) address, or static IP address, is a permanent number assigned to a computer/modem by an Internet service provider (that’s us!)
A dynamic Internet Protocol address, or dynamic IP address, is a temporary IP address that is assigned to a computing device or router when it’s connected to a network. A dynamic IP address is an automatically configured IP address assigned by a DHCP server to every new network device.
The Temptation of a Static IP
Being assigned a permanent number means that the device could be easier to find on the network. If you plan on gaming on your PC via VPN (Virtual Private NetworkAny connection of two or more computers that enables them to...), you almost certainly will want to do so through a static IP. Logging in to your network remotely is made possible with this kind of setup.
When your IP address changes, you become more difficult to find. This is called “lack of recognition.” Using a static IP address reduces this issue, which is useful for heavy data users, since the IP never resets.
Why It’s Not For Everyone
Static IP addresses are a commodity. Only so many IP addresses exist, and because they must be purchased and held by the Internet Service Provider, it’s common practice to provide static IP addresses only by request and at an additional monthly fee.
Computers using dynamic IP are more difficult to track. Think of an IP address like leaving footprints in the snow. A static IP leaves a clear trail to follow, while a dynamic IP is like switching up shoes and directions for a more complex trail.
Also, if you’re using a static IP address and have multiple devices, each device must be manually configured. Most times, it’s best to reach out to the pros at YK Communications for help with this process: (361) 771-3334.
Do I Need a Static IP Address for PS5 or Xbox Series X?
Our opinion? It’s not likely. Unless you’re running a server or attempting to do most of your gaming remotely or via VPN, the speed and uptime differences aren’t even noticeable.
Okay, But I Want One Anyway.
