Random Hour QRM between locals can almost always be avoided if both stations operate prudently.
The chart below lists several possible problems; however some are not really problems but rather part
of the activity period design.
| Problems : | Possible Solutions: |
| I hear pings from other stations | This is not qrm, search for your stations pings by right-clicking on the green line using the mouse |
| I called CQ UP or DN XX only to find it occupied ! | There is no guarantee you will find unoccupied frequencies. This is not QRM use the other stations pings and complete your contact using Random Hour Messages. |
| All I hear is my neighbor & LOUD! | Use the same Tx Sequence as your neighbor (coordination) |
| I have a few seconds of QRM using the same tx sequence as my neighbor? | All stations should have the accurate time but you could consider using Dsec. If only a few seconds off, you still should be able to make contacts. (he will hear your overlap also, one of you has the wrong time) |
| The Call Freq. is just too busy with locals! | Use the offset method (First find a clear spot and CQ U / D) .. problem solved! |
| My rx is desensitized because of High Powered Stations in my area! | Stations operating Activity Periods should give consideration to turning off the HP, 100 150 watts is adequate for most contacts. You could point your antenna away from the strong station. |
| This just doesnt work with my neighbor | Communicate with them via email or ssb and set-up some guidelines you can both follow |
| Someone is using Single Tones or short-hand messages !? | This is an educational problem, be a polite elmer and lend assistance. |
| The band opened ! | QSY to appropriate mode / freq. or wait for band to close because FSK441 is a meteor scatter mode not intended for Es or tropo |
- Most stations can and will be able to operate "simplex" during Random Hour. Remember this is the desired method to create numerous pings for an activity period. Newbies can learn, operators can test new equipment, excelent time for demonstrations.
- Stations who are not comfortable operating "simplex" for what ever the reason should use the "off-set" method of calling CQ on 50.260 or 144.140 MHz. These are good times to practice the "off-set" method.
- Stations should not use the "simplex" random hour method of calling CQ during contests or routine / normal operations. The prudent method is off-set calling except during the Random Hour periods.
- Before RH starts, operators should verify their PC clock accuracy.
