The "New" North American VHF WSJT
 Geminids Test
Contest Managers: Bill / W5WVO, Mike /WB2FKO, Tip /WA5UFH and John /N6ENU
for the
WSJTGROUP (Sponsors of these events)

Bill W5WVO here. This year during the Geminids meteor shower the WSJT Group is holding a somewhat redesigned contest. Formerly called the North America High-Speed Meteor Scatter contest, this year's contest is open to all contacts made via any WSJT digital mode, not just meteor scatter. Though we expect the majority of contacts made will still be via MS, contacts can also be made via any natural terrestrial propagation mode. In addition, we're adding the new wrinkle of DISTANCE SCORING, with bonus miles awarded for higher-frequency and/or random unscheduled contacts.

 High Speed Meteor Scatter Contests

The initial NA HSMS contest was organized by Steve Harrison KO0U/1, Jay Kesterson K0GU and  Robert Brown N7STU (now KR7O). The first email announcement is copied <here> plus some additional comments.

Contest History...
We have scaled back to one contest the Winter Geminids. There is considerable effort and expense to run a rally and the contest committee decided to concentrate on just one event. There is an option to revive a second contest down the road if there is sufficient activity during the contest.

I would like to present the NA HSMS contest. This was a joint effort of
K0GU, KO0U, and N7STU after K0GU's initial contest inquiry last year. The
Western States Weak Signal Society has agreed to sponsor the awards for
this event. The contest period was chosen to coincide with the rise of the
Eta Aquarids meteor shower. We hope all active HSCW stations will
participate, and encourage ANYONE even slightly interested in HSCW to join
in. We have even created a Meteor Scatter Listener (MSL) class so that
those that aren't transmit ready yet, or wish to listen first to see if
they are interested, can give it a try. We are confident that most
listeners will be hooked, just like those currently active.

Some comments relating to the beginning of NA HSMS Contests.

The first contest was held in April 1998 for the eta Aquarids. That shower was chosen for the contest to promote what was an under appreciated minor shower (pretty much useless for SSB/CW due to the short pings). It ended up proving that HSMS techniques were a perfect match for this shower. The eta Aquarids is one of my favorite showers as it is broad and very reliable (as opposed to most of the major showers).

The WSWSS (now defunct) sponsored and printed certificates for maybe two contests (have to dig through my archives to confirm) before I personally took over sponsoring the contest. The last contest under this organizational group was in 2001. There was a desire to add WSJT modes to the contest, but the creators/organizers wanted to keep it a HSCW contest. Somewhere around that time the creator of the program all of us were using to generate HSCW had a hard drive crash, lost all his source code and stopped developing the program. Shortly there after, FSK441 really took off as the predominant meteor scatter mode and there was not enough interest remaining in HSCW for us to continue the contest in 2002. I don't know if  KO0U or K0GU ever  tried WSJT.

I think VE5UF and W8WN (and maybe others) may have been involved in the brainstorming for this contest, but my email records only show KO0U, K0GU and myself as the creators/organizers. I believe I had a mail reflector setup for planning, but that has long since been killed and any records there were not archived (except in the mailboxes of those involved).
