DSL

What is DSL?

DSL is the abbreviation for Digital Subscriber Line. This is a new service that allows you to have a high-speed data connection (also called broadband) over your existing telephone line.

What are the advantages of using DSL?

It is fast! Most modems used to dial into the Internet are capable of connecting at a maximum speed of 53,000 bits per second (53Kbps). With DSL, you can achieve speeds of up to 1,500,000 bits per second (1.5 Mbps). That is 28 times faster than a 56K modem!

"Always-on" connection. With DSL, your computer is always connected to your Internet Service Provider, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no dialing and no busy signals. Your Internet service will be waiting on you!

It does not tie-up your telephone! DSL allows you to be on-line with your Internet Service Provider AND send and receive telephone calls at the same time. This makes DSL the perfect solution for families that have one phone line that is often tied up while using the Internet.

Let's cover that again!  With DSL, you can be actively using the Internet and still make or receive telephone calls without interfering with each other.

No second telephone line required. As mentioned above, DSL works on your existing telephone line that currently provides telephone service to your home or office.

Are there any restrictions on who can get DSL?

Yes, DSL is only available in areas where Ganado Telephone Company provides local telephone service. Even within those areas, DSL service will only travel a limited distance over copper wires before it begins to degrade in quality and reliability. This distance is usually 18,000 feet, but factors such as the quality of the copper cable will vary this distance.

In order to make DSL service available to a greater number of users, Ganado Telephone Company has installed several distribution points throughout their service area. Each of these distribution points are connected back to the equipment office by fiber optic cables which reduce the amount of loss that would occur using copper cables. This means that you only need to be within range of one of our many DSL distribution points and not necessarily within a certain range of the area's main equipment offices.  This has allowed us to provide DSL service to customers located more than 10 miles from the town!

What does DSL cost?

DSL is priced according to the term you choose to commit to have service.

$29.95 monthly 36 month service commitment waived provisioning fee
$39.95 monthly 12 month service commitment waived provisioning fee
$49.95 monthly no commitment required $99 provisioning fee

What equipment do I need to use DSL?

In order to use DSL, you must have a computer running Windows 98, Windows SE, Windows 2000 or Windows XP and a DSL modem.

YK Communications now includes a basic modem FREE with our $29.95 monthly service plan.

YK Communications stocks an assortment of DSL modems. YK will completely program modems we sell.  Please call for additional details.

Do I need anything else?   Are there any other charges?

DSL includes Internet services.  There are no additional "internet service fees" required to use DSL.

Some computers may require the installation of a Network Interface Card (NIC, Network port or Ethernet Port) or a USB port if not already equipped.

Some customers may need a very small filter plugged into their telephone jacks to filter unwanted noise that DSL service can create. YK Communications will provide up to three filters per DSL account, free of charge upon request. Additional filters can be purchased as needed for under $10.00 each.

How long does it take to get my DSL service installed?

Ganado Telephone Company and YK Communications strives to complete all orders for DSL service within 7-10 business days. Due to the high demand for DSL service and equipment nation wide, there may be times when we do not have ample supplies of equipment on hand to fill each and every order.
